How to Drive a Manual With a Broken Clutch Pedal

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Get in your car, start it, and the clutch pedal is broken. It's engaged, but you are unable to press the clutch.

Steps

  1. 1
Turn the ignition to "on" position, and lock the steering wheel to get out of your car park. Turn the key on and off quickly — the car will jump forward a little. Keep doing that until you get out of the parking spot.

  2. 2
Have the gearstick in first, and start the car. It will hop, but it will start.
  3. 3
Drive and over-rev the vehicle a little.
  4. 4
Shift by moving the gearstick out of first and push it into second. It will take a little effort, and will probably grind, but there is a sweet spot where it will just slot in.

    • To shift up to the next gear, drive about 500-1000 rpm above that sweet spot and shift it into the next gear.
    • To downshift, pull it out of gear, give it a bit of a rev and slot it into gear. This is muchharder than up-shifting, but it is doable.
  5. 5
Turn the car off. When you come to a stop turn the car off.

Tips

  • Do it as a last resort.
  • Some vehicles may be almost impossible to downshift, apart from going into 2nd gear when under 15 km/h.
  • Try to vary your route, so you do not stop at an uphill as the starter won't push it up the hill.

Warnings

  • Use this only as a last resort.
  • This can, and most likely will, damage your gearbox and starter motor.
  • It's not very battery friendly at night, so turn off your lights and have the park lights on.
