How to Drain the Gas Tank of Your Car

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Drain the Gas Tank of Your Car

Did you accidentally fill up your diesel car with gasoline or the other way around? Here are some steps to prevent your whole engine from being ruined.

Steps

  1. 1
Realizing you have made a pretty bad mistake, try and remain calm.

  2. 2
Have you driven your car until it died from running on the wrong fuel? Then you have bigger problems and will have to exchange the fuel filter, spark plugs, maybe the diesel pump and some more components if you are really unlucky. It is too much to cover here, so use Google for more answers.
  3. 3
Many cars have a drain cock to let you drain the fuel tank easily. Make sure you have a proper container to catch the draining fluid, and position it under the valve, which should be located on at the lowest part of the tank. Loosen the valve and let the fuel drain out.
  4. 4
If you do not see a drain cock on your fuel tank, you will need to remove one of the fuel lines. To do this, locate the rubber hose coming out of the tank at its lowest point. Loosen the clamp on the side of the hose that connects to the fuel tank. Pull out the hose and let the fuel run out into your container.
  5. 5
Store the gas safely in a gas tank and dispose of it or reuse it properly.

Tips

  • You can use the rubber thing that fills air into bicycles to fit into the spare tank lid to make it tight such as a tire tire tube)
  • or just a bag underneath the cap.

Warnings

  • Watch out for fumes. Any spark, lit cigarette, etc could result in an explosion.
  • Be careful when you release the pressure to the tank, or you can get fuel blown out the wrong way.
  • Be careful not to over pressurize the tank, a quick blast from an air hose and then see how much comes out.
  • Be careful not to spill as fuel is toxic
