How to Add Brake Fluid to the Clutch Master Cylinder

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

In many of today's manual transmission automobiles, the clutch is engaged by using a hydraulic system that is almost identical to a hydraulic brake system. Hydraulic fluid that is contained within the master cylinder becomes pressurized when the clutch pedal is lowered. The pressurized fluid triggers the slave cylinder and disengages the clutch. The clutch is in danger of being constantly engaged, and eventually burnt out, if the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder runs low. To maintain a properly functioning clutch, it is a good idea to check the clutch fluid level annually and to replace fluid as needed. This article explains how to add brake fluid to the clutch master cylinder within most standard automobiles.

Steps

  1. 1
    Check the clutch fluid level.

    • Park the car on a level surface and turn off the engine.
    • Locate the master cylinder reservoir, which is translucent in color and usually mounted next to the brake master cylinder.
    • Confirm the fluid level and ensure that additional fluid is needed before proceeding.
  2. 2
Purchase an appropriate brake fluid. Clutch fluid does not exist. Typically, brake and/or similar fluids are used within the clutch cylinder. Check your vehicle's owner's manual to see if there are any specific exceptions, but a standard DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid is acceptable for most automobiles.
  3. 3
Wipe the master cylinder reservoir and its cap with a clean, dry rag to remove any dirt or debris. You will want to ensure that no loose particles are able to fall into the reservoir.
  4. 4
Remove the reservoir cap and add the brake fluid. Use the minimum and maximum fill lines on the measuring stick attached to the cap as a guide. Also, a clean funnel may be used to help prevent spillage.
  5. 5
Wipe off any excess fluid and reinstall the reservoir cap. Ensure that the cap is properly tightened and the rubber gasket is seated properly.

  6. Tips

Blot any brake fluid spills immediately with a thick cloth, as it can act as a corrosive agent and damage paint or clothing.

  • Always use a brand new, unopened container of brake fluid to ensure that moisture has not permeated the container and compromised the highly absorbent fluid.
  • If you notice a clear fluid leak inside the vehicle behind the clutch pedal, you may have a leak or a faulty clutch master cylinder.

Warnings

  • Do not use DOT5, a high performance brake fluid, as it is not compatible with other brake fluids and can lead to system damage if mixed with them.
  • Always check your vehicle's user manual for instructions specific to your make and model.
