How to Change a Serpentine Belt on a '95 Jeep 2.5L

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Do you see cracks on the belt? Don't just hope it won't leave you stranded. Replace it. Other directions I've seen do not not include all the steps, even the book I paid for.

Steps

  1. 1
Lean over the radiator. The power steering pump is on your right.

  2. 2
Take careful note of the routing of the old belt. There should be a diagram sticker around the fan shroud, otherwise draw a good diagram.
  3. 3
Loosen the 3 bolts on the back of the pump bracket. Do not take them out!
  4. 4
Loosen the small bolt underneath the pump. Under the power steering pump there it a long adjusting bolt that screws out to your right and a small bolt perpendicular to it at the front side. Loosen the small bolt to the front then screw out the bolt out to the right about 1 inch.
  5. 5
    Remove the old belt.
  6. 6
Install the new belt with exact same routing.
  7. 7
Screw the long bolt back in under the PS pump to obtain proper belt tension. You should use a belt tension gauge.
  8. 8
Tighten the 3 bolts on the back of the PS pump and the one bolt under the PS pump that is to the front.

Tips

  • It is best to remove the belt and take it to the parts store to make sure you get the right one.
  • To buy the new belt you'll need to know make, model, motor size, A/C, power steering and pulley size. Yes, it is easier to just take the old belt with you.
  • You will get dirty. Have a good hand wash setup ready.

Warnings

  • Turn off the motor. Make sure the motor cannot be started while you do this work.
  • Make sure the motor is cold to avoid burns.
  • A serpentine belt does everything. If it breaks, your in trouble! Replace a worn belt before it leaves you stranded. Maybe carry a spare.
  • Get the routing of the new belt right or you will ruin your motor.

Things You'll Need

  • New serpentine belt (see tips).
  • Belt Tension Guage
  • 1/2" socket and 1/2" hand wrench.
  • Stuff to wash really dirty hands.
