Change Differential Fluid

Here are 2 methods of changing differential fluid on a rear wheel drive car

Steps

  1. 1
Clean the differential, using either high pressure washer or degreaser and a hose.

  2. 2
Locate the differential fill plug. This will be on the rear diff cover about a third to half of the way up.
  3. 3
Remove the plug. Fill plugs vary depending on model. Some will have to be removed using a spanner/wrench, others with a screwdriver or similar.
  4. 4
look for a drain plug. This will be directly under the diff. If it does not have a drain plug don't worry too much.
  5. 5
Placing a drain pan or similar under the diff, remove the drain plug and allow oil to drain.
  6. 6
If your diff does not have a drain plug then remove the bolts holding the rear cover of the diff and gently prise off with a screw driver or similar. Some covers will require the assistance of a hammer behind your screw driver. Allow oil to drain.
  7. 7
Once all the oil has drained replace the drain plug and do up tightly.
  8. 8
In the case of those without the luxury of a drain plug, remove all gasket material from the diff housing and cover and wipe clean ensuring no particles of gasket or dirt etc enter the diff housing. Fit the rear cover back on using either a new gasket or RTV sealant.
  9. 9
Fill diff with the specified oil (obtained by manufacturer, service book, owners manual or the back of most diff oil containers) through the fill plug hole until the oil just starts to come out of the hole.
  10. 10
Re-fit the drain plug ensuring to do it up tightly.
  11. 11
Take the vehicle for a short drive just to warm up the diff and oil and check for leaks

Tips

  • The use of thread locking compounds, such as the loctite range, on the diff cover (if removed) is highly recommended.
  • If your drain or fill plugs look like they are going to go inside the diff when tightening STOP!! Remove the plug and replace it with a new one. Alternatively for a cheap or emergency fix (until you get a new plug) use a considerable amount of thread tape on the plug and don't over tighten. Make you way to the nearest auto parts store or likewise and purchase a new plug.
  • sand paper can be used on the diff housing and cover plate to remove hard to get off gasket.
  • Some diffs may incorporate a removable breather or a short piece of hose, this is located on the top of the diff. Replace or clean when changing diff oil.

Warnings

  • Be mindful of hot oil it can and will burn you! Make sure the diff is cool to touch when removing the oil to prevent possible burns.
  • When ever you use a hammer to strike another object, such as a screw driver or chisel, wear eye protection!
