How to Check Your Oil

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Check Your Oil

This is how to check if you have the correct level motor oil in your car. This is a very important part of maintaining your vehicle. Motor oil is the lubricant between the moving engine parts. Too low a level, the parts will wear quickly and increase likelihood of seizure.

Steps

  1. 1
Get an old rag/ cloth or some kitchen roll.

  2. 2
Release bonnet (hood) hatch to gain access to your engine.
  3. 3
Find the dip-stick handle (Probably a small circle, or T-pull. Most likely yellow).
  4. 4
Use your cloth to wipe off any oil that is already on the dip-stick.
  5. 5
Replace dip-stick ensuring it is all the way in.
  6. 6
Remove again and check that the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks on the stick.
  7. 7
If level is either below minimum or just above, then top up immediately, making sure you use the the correct oil for your engine.
  8. 8
Repeat the test after topping up to make sure it is between 'Min' and 'Max' to ensure the longevity of your engine.
  9. 9
Replace dip-stick and close bonnet (hood).

Tips

  • Ideally get the oil level around half way between 'Min' and 'Max' - less will increase the frequency you will need to top up. Forgetting can be expensive.
  • If your oil light illuminates on the dash, this is a sign that your engine has dangerously low levels of oil. Refill immediately.
  • If you have to top up frequently this is an indication of a leak. Get this seen to as it will cost you more in oil in the long run that to have the leak repaired.

Warnings

  • If your oil light illuminates on the dash, this is a sign that your engine has dangerously low levels of oil. Refill immediately.
