How to Replace a Piston Ring on a Dirtbike

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

This information will demonstrate how to replace a piston ring not only on a yz 125, but pretty much on every dirt bike. Follow these steps carefully and your bike will be working as good as new!

Steps

  1. 1
Drain your antifreeze and remove the gas tank from the dirt bike. Remove the seat also.

  2. 2
Unscrew the muffler and take off the springs with a tusk or whatever you may prefer.
  3. 3
Begin moving the wires that are in the way of the engine. Remove the spark plug and the top engine block on the dirt bike.
  4. 4
Make sure that the gasket or the ring is not lost after you take off the engine block.
  5. 5
Remove a panel on the side of the engine. Remove the vertical piece that is inside of the panel (it will be the closest thing to your face).
  6. 6
Begin unscrewing the rest of the engine from the dirt bike and remove it. Then you will see a piston.
  7. 7
Remove the piston and cover up the exposed space that is open after taking off the piston. Make sure before you take off the ring that you know where it is placed so you know where to put the new ring on the piston.
  8. 8
Put on the new piston ring and reconnect the piston with the bar inside of the bottom of the engine.
  9. 9
Grease inside of the engine also for better results.
  10. 10
Test to make sure that you did everything right by grabbing the throttle to check the piston moves smoothly.
  11. 11
Put everything back together the way you took it off and you are set to go.

Tips

  • Check your owners manual for proper piston rings and the right parts.
  • Have someone with you as a partner so it is easier to replace.
  • Grease all of the exposed parts.

Warnings

  • Use the right tools.

How to Do a Drag Start on a Motocross Bike

Do a Drag Start on a Motocross Bike

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Here is how to do a drag start on any type of motorbike that's not made for the road—and kick up some dirt at the same time!

Steps

  1. 1
Get yourself on some hard packed dirt if you can. The softer the dirt, the more that your wheels will spin—which is bad, unless you want to loose!

  2. 2
Make sure that your bike is warmed up. Don't sit there and hold the throttle pinned, you're bound to spit something (i.e the piston) out the cylinder wall!
  3. 3
Release the clutch about half way (or as far out as you can without stalling or shutting off the bike). Pull the front brake in partially, this will load up the front suspension. Do this when the 30 second board turns sideways, or slightly before then. The later you do this, the less stress there will be on your clutch and gears. You sure don,t want a burned out clutch before you even start the race!
  4. 4
Lean over the bars so that your eyes are parallel with your forks. keep you rear end in the lowest point on the seat (in the middle).
  5. 5
If it makes it any easier, tuck your boots under the front of the foot pegs, this will keep your legs from flying backward as you quickly accelerate!
  6. 6
Pull the throttle back about 3/4 open, depending on the dirt (or concrete) you're starting on, you should be in about second gear.
  7. 7
As the gate drops, you need to react very quickly, releasing the clutch and front brake at the same time. when you reach top of the gear you are in (or when the power "signs off") shift up, continue until you need to start breaking for the first turn.
  8. 8
As you come into the first corner, you should be riding on the furthest inside part of the track possible. That way you can pass riders on the outside, and possibly get the "hole shot", or the first rider out of the first turn.
  9. 9
    Be cautious of other riders.

Tips

  • Make sure the bike doesn't pop a big mono. If it does, either lean off the throttle or take your foot off the pegs toward the back, and lean over the bars.
  • Start in second gear if you feel that it's necessary. This may help for Thumpers.
  • Tuck your feet under the pegs until you need 2nd.

Warnings

  • Do not hold the throttle open if you wheelie.

Change Oil on a Yamaha 450 YZF Dirtbike

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

If you have any troubles performing this follow the steps provided below.

Steps

  1. 1
Make sure the bike is stable, and propped up by something on the forks. This will allow the motor to be free of obstructions.

  2. 2
Place the oil catch pan underneath the motor.
  3. 3
Undo the oil drain bolt; let the oil drain into the pan.
  4. 4
When you are sure that the oil has all been drained, take off the oil filter cover located on the bottom right side of the motor (more oil will come out here) above the frame.(you will need an allan wrench and a small socket ratchet)
  5. 5
Take off the oil filter and slowly roll the engine over with your hand on the kick start to be sure all the oil has left the pump system.
  6. 6
Put the oil plug back into the drain hole.
  7. 7
Take your new filter and place it back into the existing position of the previous one.(be sure to lubricate the seal before place the filter back)
  8. 8
Put your oil filter cover back on.
  9. 9
Snug up the oil drain bolt and oil filter cover.
  10. 10
Grab your oil and pour it into the oil fill hole located on your frame near the handlebars on the left hand side. When the amount of oil needed is reached put plug back in.
  11. 11
Perform 3-4 revolutions of the motor but do not start it. This is to lubricate all motor parts.
  12. 12
Start motor and let idle until warm (3-5 minutes)

Tips

  • Make sure engine is cold
  • Always lubricate the rubber o ring with the waste oil on the new oil filter
  • From empty, bike should have 1.13 liters of oil. NEVER FILL ALL THE WAY!
  • Never start motor while the oil is drained
  • Don't let anything other than oil in the oil tank pump or filter
  • This should be performed every 10-13 hours of riding
  • If oil is grey or milky this is due to water or burning the clutch when this happens the clutch basket gets so hot the metals start to break up into tiny shavings leaving you with a grey colour in your drained oil
  • This procedure should take 10 minutes when you get comfortable with these steps

Warnings

  • Engine should always be cold possible burn risk

Things You'll Need

  • 13mm wrench or socket (lefty loosy, righty tighty)
  • 1.13 liters of 10w/30 oil
  • New oil filter (correct one for the bike)
  • Oil drip pan
  • Allen key set for the oil filter cover
