Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual

Silence Exhaust

Do you hear an unwanted exhaust noise coming from your vehicle? Is it the type of exhaust you have or is it a malfunction in the exhaust system? There are a few steps to determining which problem you have, and how to fix these problems. Read on.

Steps

  1. 1
You will need a partner for an accurate diagnosis.

  2. 2
You will need space to get under the vehicle so you can view the exhaust system from the engine to the rear exit point. Always follow saftey procedures before lifting a vehilce. Personal injury or death can occur if improper lifting techniques are used.
  3. 3
Start the vehicle in a well ventilated area and let it come to a steady idle.
  4. 4
Send your partner to the rear exit point on your exhaust system. Using a rag or other comparable item, block the exhaust from exiting, and allow pressure to build in the system. Warning: Exhaust temperatures can reach upwards of 750 degrees F. This step should be performed with the neccesary precautions to prevent personal burns. i.e. leather gloves...etc.
  5. 5
While your partner is doing this, you will need to be inspecting the exhast for unwanted escape points and loose mounting points. You may be able to identify leaks by noise, sight, or feel. Noises can range from clicks to whooshes. throughout the entire system, from the manilfolds at the engine to the exit point. Many times carbon deposits collect on the perimeter of a hole or leak. These areas will look black while the rest of the system looks normal. Do not touch the exhaust. But you may be able to feel exhaust blowing out from an unwanted area. If your system was loose anywhere have that mounting component repaired.
  6. 6
Was it a leak? Yes- move to step eight. No- move to step seven.
  7. 7
Your exhaut system may be naturally noisey or obnoxious. Check into having a newer, quieter style of muffler installed.
  8. 8
Your leak may be causing other problems with your vehicle as well. You need to repair the damaged component(s) as soon as possible. It may need anything from a new clamp or pipe section to a new muffler or manifold.
  9. 9
Put the vehicle down now. It looks cool up there but you'll never get that big of a tire under it.
