How to Siphon Gas

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Knowing how to siphon gas can be a handy skill in all sorts of situations, particularly if you routinely run out of gas nowhere near a gas station. You might also decide to siphon gas out of a vehicle or boat if you run out of gas while mowing the lawn and want to quickly refill the lawnmower. Or, you may need to siphon gas out of vehicle, boat or lawnmower to winterize it. Here's how to siphon gas from a car gas tank into an empty gas can with just a piece of tubing.

Steps

  1. 1
Select a gas can or other closed container to fill siphon the gas into. It is dangerous to transport gas in a bucket or other open container.

  2. 2
Purchase clear tubing that has the right diameter and length.
    • It should be clear, so you can see the gas flowing through the tubing and spot and problematic air bubbles.
    • A diameter of 1 inch (2 centimeters) should be sufficient. If the tubing is too narrow and the flow is too slow, the siphon may not work.
    • The tubing should long enough to reach from inside the gas tank to the gas can. If you have too much extra length, it's harder to keep air bubbles from forming.
  3. 3
Set the gas can on the ground near the opening for the car's gas tank.

Feed one end of the tubing down into the car's gas tank. Blow air into the other end and listen for the sound of bubbles. This will let you know the tubing is below the surface of the gas, which it needs to be.

  1. 1
Stand next to the vehicle and place the other end of the tubing in your mouth.
  2. 2
Place your fingers around the tubing near your mouth, so you are ready to crimp it before gas enters your mouth.
  3. 3
Suck on the tubing and watch the gas flow into the tube. Crimp the tubing tightly near the end before the gas reaches your mouth.
  4. 4
Remove the tubing from your mouth without releasing the crimp. If you see air bubbles in the tubing, release the crimp and drain the gas back into the car to start over.
  5. 5
Stick the end of the tubing into the gas can and release your crimp. The gas should begin to flow into the gas can.
  6. 6
Pull the tubing out of the car gas tank when you have nearly reached the amount of gas you want to siphon.
  7. 7
Remove the tubing from the gas container once all of the gas has flowed out of the tubing.
