How to Transfer Your Cellphone Phone Book to Your Prius

Article provided by wikiHow, a wiki how-to manual

If your Toyota Prius and your mobile phone are both equipped with bluetooth, you can use the speakerphone built into the car to talk on the phone safely while you drive. To make it easy to dial, you can load the phonebook from your mobile phone into the car's memory, where you can dial from the navigation screen.

Steps

  1. 1
Turn on the car. It can be on or in acc mode.

  2. 2
Ensure your phone is synched to the car. A few seconds after being turned on, the card should beep and the display should say that a bluetooth connection has been made.
  3. 3
Press the info button next to the navigation display.
  4. 4
Press the telephone button on the display.
  5. 5
Press the Settings button on the display.
  6. 6
Press the down arrow on the display to see more settings options.
  7. 7
Next to where it says Transfer Phone Data on the display, press the Start Transfer button. [A Motorola V551 or Z6tv phone will then disconnect. It's okay; see the notes below.] If the selected Prius phone book is not empty, then choose either "Overwrite" or "Add" on the display. If you select "Add" and transfer an entry already in the Prius phone book, duplicate named entries will result.
  8. 8
Tell your phone to send the info to your car.
  9. 9
On a Sony Ericsson T608 phone, enter the address book from the main menu with all the icons, then choose option 7 (business cards), then option 3 (send all). It searches and asks you to pick the recipient -- in this case the Prius -- and then transfers them all. You will need to search for a similar option on your phone.
  10. 10
On an AT&T Blackberry Curve 8300, from the main screen, select the "Setting" folder, then select "Options", then select "Bluetooth", then select the bluetooth device (in this case your car) to which you are wanting to transfer your cell phone phonebook, then select "Transfer Address Book".
  11. 11
    Test edit.
  12. 12
With Samsung Gleam phone following car screen saying "Under Transfer". On your phone: 1.Select "Menu" 2.Select "Settings & Tools" 3.Select "Settings & Tools" 4.Select "Bluetooth Menu" 5.Select "Car Phone" 6.Select "Options" 7.Select “Send Name Card” 8.Mark each number you desire to send to car phone 9.Press “Done” key 10.Press “OK” to connect to car phone 11.Transfer will take place and Navigation system will display “Transfer Complete”. Then you can edit names and number on car phone.

Tips

  • The Sony Ericsson T608 can store multiple numbers for one contact. Note that when you transfer your phone book to the Prius, it only loads the first number for each contact into the car's phone book.
  • For the Motorola V551, you can only transfer one number at a time. After you have followed steps 1 through 7 above, choose Address Book in the Motorola V551, view the address entry you want to transfer, press Menu, then scroll to and select Send. The phone will prompt you to look for a Hands Free device, so click Select to have it search for your car (whatever you've named that device), and the phone and car will reconnect and exchange the number.
  • For the Motorola Z6tv (SW version: PARS_01.16.0C), you can transfer the whole phone book or selected numbers. After steps 1-7 above, choose "Contacts", then highlight one record you want to transfer. Hit the "Options" button, then "Send Name Card", then "Bluetooth". The selected name card will appear. To send multiple name cards, press "Add", then choose "Add Multiple" to add by check boxes, or "Add All" to transfer the whole phone book. Press "Done" when you are through selecting by check box for "Add Multiple". Then press "Send". Then select "Add New Device" and then "OK". The phone will search for the prius, and then connect and exchange the selected phone book entries.
  • It seems that the SMT5600 'Smart' phone (Cingular/ATT) can not transfer the whole phone book, but, at most, only one entry at a time. To transfer a contact, select the contact via the Contact soft button, select the Menu soft button, then select Beam. Then select Transfer Phone Book on the Prius, then hit the Beam softbutton on the phone (again), and in about 5 seconds you should see the Prius BT receiver show up on the list of recipients, as an alphanumeric string. Select that recipient, hit Beam on the phone again, and the transfer will go thru. Most likely you'll do this for your 5-10 most important phone numbers, then give up on the rest. Format of the phone number must not include '()', spaces or '-' see warnings below. ie... must be 5555551212 NOT (555) 555-1212
  • Pretty much every Verizon phone will not work with this method. They cripple their phones' bluetooth capabilities. UPDATE: I have successfully used this method with a Motorola Z6tv phone with Verizon service and a 2005 Prius. (See Tip given above for complete procedure). Perhaps Verizon has finally decided they need to be blue-tooth competitive with other providers. Unfortunately, the same procedure fails for me with an LG VX8700 phone with Verizon service, and no entries are transferred.
  • After using the Motorola Z6tv phone to transfer multiple phone book entries, only one phone number per entry appears on the Prius phone book. It isn't the phone number marked as "default" by editing the entry, and seems to prefer home numbers first. Perhaps it is just taking the first number in the data record for the entry. If anyone can figure out how to select which number to transfer, or how to transfer all numbers associated with an entry by duplicating the name record, please post your procedure.

Warnings

  • Phone numbers should follow an XXXYYYZZZZ format. Numbers imported from a PalmOS device in the format of "515-555-1212" seem to import fine, but having a "1-" at the start, or letters like "1-800-MY-APPLE", will show up as vertical bars to the Prius and be unusable.
  • Entries with no phone numbers (such as a PalmOS address book with only an address) will import, but be greyed out (no phone number) and unusable.
