Install Neon/LEDs to Your Car Battery

If you have seen the movies in the Fast and the Furious series you've of course came across the look of neons and LEDs. This aftermarket accessory can cause serious style points although they are a good impression on your local sheriff. Contact your local police station before reading on to install this great effect

Steps

  1. 1
Locate your car battery. You need to find your car's battery and know basically how it works. The black terminal is negative and the red is positive. You'll need to know this before you go on. Get familiar with these colors. After you've become used to the system take of the cords going to the red (positive) terminal and add on a terminal ring to it.

  2. 2
Attach your wire. After attaching your terminal ring you'll need to find a correct gauge wire to get the proper amount of power. The highest gauge you should be worried about using for this project is 16 gauge.
  3. 3
Running through your firewall. Get your cord and run it through your cars firewall which is the metal wall separating your engines heat from the front of the inside of your car. Find a preexisting hole to slide the wire through or make you own.
  4. 4
Adding your Distributor. A distributor is a device that takes one cord and makes it into multiple ports for cords. Very useful so that you can add multiple lights, as you'll be inclined to do. Attack the distributor box to your wire that is attached to your battery.
  5. 5
Add on the neon/LEDs. Add your lighting to the distribution box and enjoy the light!

Tips

  • Install a switch or toggle box to keep the ON/OFF switch in your power. If you don't install a switch your neon will stay on and drain your battery
  • Contact your authorities and ask them their laws on aftermarket lighting, this could save you a ticket!
  • If you have a 3 pronged switch, the top prong should have PWR or BTRY on it, which means you connect the power cable there (should only be one cable).
  • The second will be the power to the neons (so 2 cables go here), this should say ACC
  • The final (third) prong should have GND printed on it for the earth which you can connect to any metal in the car (preferably with ring terminals screwed on using existing screws).
  • Installing a Relay that is inline between your battery and your distribution block and is switched from the accessory power will shut off your neons/LEDs as soon as your car is shut off but make sure the relay has enough capacity for the voltage that will be running through it.

Warnings

  • Before doing any electrical work on your car always be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • FUSE YOUR WIRES! The most important part is to correctly fuse your wires. In this setup preferable between your battery terminal and your distribution box.

Things You'll Need

  • Neon/LED lights
  • Correct Fuses
  • Correct Wire
  • Ring Terminal
  • Some electricity know-how
