One of the first things a Chevy truck owner should do after driving a new truck home is to inspect the spare tire. If you bought a used truck, you need to make sure that the truck has a spare tire that is in good shape. It's also a good idea to demonstrate how to remove the spare tire from under the truck to anyone else who may drive your truck.

   Tilt the back of the passenger seat forward, and slide it forward as far as it will go. Locate and remove the lug wrench and spare tire tool kit in the space you opened up. If your truck has 2 sets of seats, the tool kit can be found by lifting the rear up to a raised position.

   Turn the handle that holds the retaining bolt securing the tool kit counter clockwise. Slide the tool kit out from under the bolt.

   Locate a flashlight and a tire pressure gauge before carrying the tool kit to the back of the truck and dropping the tailgate.

   Lay out a couple of shop towels to protect the bed of your truck if it is not equipped with a bed liner, and lay the tools from the tool kit out in the bed.

   Look for the spare tire access hole. Depending on the year of your truck, it could be next to the rear license plate, inside the rear hatch door or right above the rear bumper. Consult your owner's manual to find out exactly where it is on your particular truck.
   • Most Chevy trucks manufactured after 2006 have a security lock installed. You have to open this with the truck's ignition key.

   Turn on the flashlight and shine it into the access hole to determine what adapter is necessary to release the spare tire cable. You have to assemble the spare tire tools in a certain manner for it to work. It will take a square drive, a small hook application or a security lock. The security lock must be placed on the end of the small hook of the spare tire tool if it is used.

   Attach 2 spare tire extensions end to end, making sure they interlock securely.
