Due to the high voltage constantly sent through the spark plug wires they have the tendency to increase in resistance over time, eventually creating too much resistance to allow electricity to flow. With the increase in resistance in the wires, there is a decrease in the amount of electricity arriving spark plugs. The result of which is incomplete combustion of gases inside the cylinder. Damage to the protective shield incasing the spark plug wires indicates the need for replacement of spark plug wires as well as resistance that exceeds the manufacturer’s specification.
Steps
- 1Open and prop up the hood of your vehicle. The hood latch is typically located to the lower left hand side of the driver's dashboard.
- 2Locate the spark plug wires, the wires are typically located next toe the valve covers at the top of the engine block; they will be attached to spark plugs inside the engine block on one end and to a distributor or ignition coils on the other.
- 3Once located, take note of the length and location of each wire, it will be necessary to replace the wires in the same location from which they came. If you connect the wires in the wrong order, your engine will misfire and run poorly.
- 4Use a spark plug wire removal tool to unplug and remove the wires.
- 5Install the new wires by connecting them in the same order as they originated. Once the plugs are all attached start your engine to ensure everything was connected correctly.
- 6Close and latch the hood.
Tips
- Always note the locations of each spark plug, as it is critical that they are replaced in the same location they were removed
- Spraying water on the spark plug wires with the engine running may result in a spark jumping out of the side of a wire, grounding to the engine block, this is a good indication of a bad spark plug wire
- Some vehicles may not use spark plug wires (coil on plug)
- If possible, remove and then replace only one spark plug and wire at a time to avoid potential confusion about wire locations.
Warnings
- Never attempt to remove a spark plug wire with the engine running, odds are it will give you a good zap
