So if your exhaust ever falls off and you are broke(it happens to me a lot). Its generally good to pick up a few items to keep in your trunk, especially if you drive a beater(like me), they're handy things to have anyway. All of these items can be purchased at your local hardware store for less than about 30 dollars.
Steps
- 1Wait for your exhaust to cool off.
- 2Locate your jack in your car.
- 3Look under your car and find where the exhaust has fallen off.
- 4Locate a safe load point under your car.
- 5Jack up your car.
- 6Assess the damage.
- 7You will have one or maybe multiple problems.
- You have broken or have a rotted off exhaust hanger.
- Find the broken Exhaust Hanger and take it off(save it for later).
- Locate a solid piece of metal that has at least 1/8 of an inch clearance on all sides.*
- Loop Metal Water Heater Strap Around Exhaust Pipe and Piece of metal mentioned in the previous step.
- Pull Water Heater Strap Tight.
- Loop Tie Wire through Holes in Strap.
- Twist Tie Wire tight with Pliers.
- Cut Off excess wire and strapping with Tin Snips.
- Rusted out or Broken Weld joint.
- Use Tin Snips to cut the Tin Can's bottom out.
- Use Tin Snips to cut the Tin Can from one opening to the other.
- Wrap Tin Can around Broken Weld.
- Squeeze the Can down on to the Weld.
- Loop two pieces of Tie Wire around each end of the can.
- Tighten each wire so the can is snug and will not move.
- Cut off excess wire.
- A hole(either in the pipe or in a component).
- Use Tin Snips to cut the Tin Can's bottom out.
- Use Tin Snips to cut the Tin Can from one opening to the other.
- Use Tin Snips to cut a Patch roughly twice the size of the hole.
- Loop two pieces of Tie Wire around each end of the Patch and component/pipe.
- Tighten each wire so the Patch is snug and will not move.
- Cut off excess wire.
- You have broken or have a rotted off exhaust hanger.
Tips
- The piece of metal should be a pipe, bracket, open piece of frame, pretty much anything you can strap the pipe to.
- Once you have a chance to let your car sit for 8 or more hours.
- You can wait until the exhaust cools off and seal any exhaust leaks with JB weld.
