How to Restart a Car

Article provided by wikiHow, a wiki how-to manual.

Restart a Car

Many of us have had the problem of a dead or depleted battery. However, owners of vehicles with manual transmissions (standard or "stick shift") can start their car even if the battery is dead!

Steps

  1. 1
Get a couple of people to help you.

  2. 2
Push the car to an area where you have some room to get some speed.
  3. 3
Have someone who knows how to drive the vehicle get in the car.
  4. 4
Turn the key to the "On" position (but don't try to start the car!).
  5. 5
Put the car in 2nd gear, and hold in the clutch.
  6. 6
    Tell your helpers to push!
  7. 7
Let out the clutch, and give it some gas when the vehicle reaches 5-7mph (8-10kph). The car will start.
  8. 8
Thank your helpers, and continue on your way.

Tips

  • This works best if you can roll down the hill. If you have a hill, you may not need helpers.

Warnings

  • Make sure nobody is in front of the car when you attempt to push start it.
  • Be careful when starting the car. Make sure you give the car enough gas to get it started.
