Need to do some work under your car? Don't settle for leaning on a skateboard and sliding under and out of your car, follow these steps to make sure you do it the right way.
Steps
- 1Block the wheels opposite of the end you are jacking. If jacking the rear, block the front wheels with 2x4 or bricks. If the car is a manual, put it in reverse - the engine will stop the car rolling forward. If jacking the front, you can probably set the parking brake and that should prevent the rear wheels from moving.
- 2Chose a sturdy point on the car to place jack under (a place that won't get damaged). If you jack from the side under the body, you can crush sheet metal and damage the car.
- 3Use jack stands to support the car in case the jack fails or slips. Don't work under the car with the jack alone. If it fails, you will get crushed. Do not use blocks of wood or bricks. They are not stable enough to support the vehicle, especially while you're working under it.
- 4When finished with the work, remove the blocks or stands, release the jack and take it from under the vehicle.

Tips
- The owner's manual may show proper jacking points. Carefully check your jacking point for hoses, fuel lines and wires. You can damage brake lines and other parts if you put the jack against them.
Warnings
- Hydraulic jacks can slip or bleed down slowly. Use Jack Stands so you don't get hurt.
