How to Find the Chassis and Engine Number

Article provided by wikiHow, a wiki how-to manual.

Where do I get the chassis and engine number in a Kenyan car? This is a question i was recently asked by a friend and i thought why not do an article about it?

The Chassis number and engine number in a car are referred as the Vehicle Identification Numbers, popularly known in acronym as the VIN.

Steps

  1. 1
While looking for the location of the chassis number in a car, it is important to note that some cars do not have the chassis. One such example is the Beemer.

  2. 2
Look on the pillar. The chassis number is usually found on the left driver’s door jam pillar.
  3. 3
Also, look on the firewall. It can also be located under the bonnet – on the right side – on the firewall.
  4. 4
Check the lower frame. In situations where the car does not have the chassis, the VIN is commonly stamped on the lower frame, to work as the chassis number.
  5. 5
Look by the timing belt. On the other side, the engine number is usually engraved on the right side of the engine, close to the timing, also known as belt chain - down at the junction of the engine block and oil pan.

Tips

  1. The engine number includes coded information, which can be decoded to reveal important formation about the car, such as year of manufacture, country of manufacture and the engine type
