Check the Control Messages on a 2004 and Older BMW with iDrive

If you get error messages on a BMW, it may disappear after you check the control messages. But who has time to read a manual? Here's how to do it in one of these two ways.

Steps

  1. 1
Be sure to place the Comfort Access remote control in the ignition. DO NOT press Start/Stop.

  2. 2
Cluster METHOD: Press the Trip Reset button in the instrument cluster multiple times over a ten second period.
  3. 3
iDrive method: Press the iDrive controller down to select Agree.
  4. 4
Press down on the iDrive controller once again.
  5. 5
    Scroll clockwise to Service.
  6. 6
    Scroll clockwise to Check Control.
  7. 7
Remove the key from the ignition. Remember to push in before removing it. If you don't do so, you may break the remote controller and have to have it repaired.

Tips

  • Whichever way you feel comfortable with, do this that way.

Warnings

  • If you hold in the Start-Stop button, you may erase the key codes.
  • If you pull out directly on the remote controller, you may need a replacement one.
