How to Change Automatic Transmission Solenoids in Honda Odyssey 2000

Article provided by wikihow the wikihow manual.

Honda Odyssey transmissions of 1999, 2000, 2001 vintage are known to be problematic. It has been discussed at odyclub.com. One of the major causes of failure is that transmission filters clog and restrict transmission fluid flow. If left unattended, this leads to a gradual deterioration of the entire transmission. This article shows how to change those filters. Honda Odyssey's of this vintage (1999, 2000, 2001) did not have a easily serviceable filter. In fact, Honda manuals do not list transmission filter replacement for any service interval. It is more appropriate to call them strainers instead of filters. For various user experiences on Honda transmission problems, see odyclub's discussion thread "Honda Transmission Problem Root Cause and a Fix??"Recommended tools and resources:

  • Honda Odyssey repair manual
  • sockets, wrenches
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)
  • [other items to be listed]

There are strainers inside four different solenoids:

  • A/T Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Valve A and B
  • Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Valve - Shift Solenoid Valve A
  • Shift Solenoid Valve B
  • Shift Solenoid Valve C

Conventions followed in the instructions below: The instructions below complement those mentioned in the Honda Repair manual. Steps to follow:[To be fleshed out:]

  • Direction: "Front" direction points towards the front-tip of the car. Rear points towards the rear-end. Passenger-side and driver-side are self-explanatory

Steps

  1. 1
Change the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

  2. 2

  3. 3
Remove battery and battery base - see steps 6 to 9 in pages 10-16 and 10-17 of repair manual.
  4. 4
To remove battery base, you need to remove 4 bolts . One is on the front-driver side, one on the front-passenger side, one on the rear driver side, and one on rear passenger side. The most difficult to remove is the one on the rear-passenger side. To loosen that bolt, use a angled box-wrench (not a socket-wrench), use your left hand to reach the bolt from under the battery base from the front.
